Capstone Design

Breast Milk Centrifuge

Innovating, designing, fabricating, and testing a new form of centrifuge.

Over the course of the Fall 2020 semester, working from a PhD team’s thesis proposal, I served as team leader to independently design, fabricate, test, and present a final prototype to meet their requirements for an innovative new centrifuge design. The purpose of this project was to create a new form of centrifuge, allowing working mothers to process their breast milk for alternative storage, preserving the natural, healthy immunological cells. As team leader, I managed design, technical evaluation, hardware procurement, and fabrication, as well as drafted presentation materials, such as bi-weekly progress presentations, and a final technical paper.

1. Confer with the project’s sponsors to establish a set of specification goals, and calculate material needs to ensure proper device operation. Sample materials can be found below.

2. Create a design, collect a bill of materials, procure hardware, and create a physical prototype.

3. Draft a final report, including project process, costs of prototype, prototype evaluations, and suggestions for future improvements.
